We ventured down towards Central Jersey for another weekend of mini golf, and stopped by Bluegrass Mini Golf, the site of the 2014 and 2017 US Mini Golf Open. The theme is horse racing, as the course sits just adjacent to the Monmouth Park Racetrack, so close you can even hear the starting horns and the commentary for some of the races.

Designed by Harris Golf, Bluegrass actually features two courses (Blue & Green), but with no deviation in the theme. We will end up referring to this as really just a 36 hole course. The course prides itself on having no gimmicks and relying more on skill than luck, and that is definitely true, but it reality, it just means you end up with a lot of relatively simple holes on a flat landscape. In an ideal world, we would have loved to see the horse theme somehow more incorporated into the design of the course, rather than just having a few statues and racehorse facts at every hole.

Don’t get us wrong, this is still a beautiful course. Although their unique teal greens seemed to be a little thin, the fairways and grounds are beautifully kept with clean water, beautifully painted accents, and nicely manicured flowerbeds. Harris very clearly has a generic theme that it regularly goes to, which makes it a bit surprising (for the better) when we see it step out of the box like they did with Starlux Mini Golf

Pricing was middle of the road: $10 for adults and $8 for seniors for 18 holes, and then get the second round tacked on for half price. As for our performance, our winner scored 43 on both courses (par was a bit of an unimaginative but accurate 40). Looking back, we had several hole-in-ones that were stolen from us or that dangled on the edge, so we could probably return and get a sub-40 score.

Overall, we were a bit disappointed by Bluegrass as a course given its US Open background (especially after our visit to Putt U), but we generally enjoyed it as a test of skills.
