Jersey Devil Golf 276 South Route 73, Hammonton, NJ 08037

When we started planning our trip to South Jersey, we knew we had to make a stop at Jersey Devil Golf after we heard about the O-Street Winter Classic was held there earlier in 2023. Surprisingly, on a very pleasant Saturday in July, we were the only people on the course, but we weren’t complaining!
Jersey Devil is a more expansive Harris Golf course, but it doesn’t feature their signature bricks, instead opting for a concrete barrier. It looks like the course is in the middle of resurfacing the holes, even since the Winter Classic in February. The holes that are resurfaced with the darker turf are very crisp but do play quite slow. However, the carpet they are replacing still appears on some holes and plays quite fast, making it difficult to get in rhythm. However, our biggest gripe at this course appears to be the patch work they have done on certain holes that actually disrupted the putting. It was clear that there were certain holes that were also in desperate need of repair, with huge gashes, and one where the tee box was completely flooded (we had a storm the previous night, but this should have been cleaned up by 3pm when we arrived).
On the plus side, this was one of the few courses we visited over the weekend that had all their water features clean and operational. It looks like management has added additional rocks to really protect you from going into the water on a few holes, so you aren’t really concerned with that. There are some challenging slopes where hitting it at the wrong angle could propel your ball out of bounds, but we managed to stay on the fairways.
There weren’t a ton of tricky obstacles here or extremely challenging holes. Our winner came in at 41 (par was 46), and we recorded 2 aces in the home stretch. Pricing was $8/person (kids under 16 were $7, but no senior discount).
Overall, we expected a bit more from this course, but perhaps we just caught it at the wrong time in the middle of resurfacing. We would believe that if we were to go back once all the repairs were done, this could bump up to a B+ or A- course, but for now, we can’t ignore some of the sloppy rips, patchwork, and water damage that were plaguing the course.
