While this isn’t our first time visiting a park course, we can appreciate a good one when we see it, and Hidden Valley is all that and more. Truly a Hidden Valley, this course is actually set behind what looks like your typical strip mall, with a delicious waterfront grille and ice cream shop at the front.
Hidden Valley is a well constructed golf course in that almost all the holes are out of view. This leads to a beautiful surprise when you make your way through the third hole to the main playing area, but also means you have no idea how crowded it can be, and yes, this course can get crowded! The course is indeed beautiful, featuring koi ponds, several waterfalls, a gristmill, a fifty-foot wooden train, and several covered bridges that harken back to old town Vermont. The course barriers are a mix of wood and old school brick, and the turf is well kept, especially for a course in a forest setting.
While Hidden Valley definitely ranks as an exquisite course, where it falls down on the list for us and keeps it from breaking to an “A” rating is difficulty. Par for this course is 40, and that is completely in line with where we see it. Almost all of these holes could be easy 2s, although there are some holes where you could get in trouble if you don’t get a good tee shot. These definitely aren’t simple holes; there is some interesting design and obstacles, but as long as you can hit straight shots, you have a decent chance at several aces.
After 3 holes in one (and two that just rimmed out), our winner finished with a 35, and everyone was within striking distance of par. If you are a strong player you can definitely make a consistent run under par. At only $9/adult and $7/senior or child, this course is well worth it as long as it isn’t too backed up.
