We had so much hope when we pulled up to Cataumet Light Mini Golf to begin our vacation on Cape Cod. From the road, the course looks beautiful with a bright nautical theme, but there are some real unfortunate leaks that sunk our visit.
Cataumet Light is a nautical theme course, with lobster traps, lighthouses, and a giant water wheel with a wishing pond. The course is decorated with several fun signs that we really got a hoot out of, including “Mulligans: $1” and “Hurricane Evacuation Plan: 1) Grab Ice Cream 2) Run Like Hell.” The design and layout of the course and holes was interesting and would have made for a good game.
However, this course is bereft with ripples on the greens. Whoever set the turf down (which looked fairly recent) did one of the worse jobs that we have ever seen. At every single hole, there were ripples that greatly affected the pathway of a ball. We can gloss over 1 or 2 holes, but have never seen it at every single hole, which is why we dropped the atmosphere rating so low. It made it even harder to really judge the difficulty given that all shots were affected by the ripples in the turf.
The course is $11/person, which feels high but is normal for the upper tier courses on the Cape. Par was 42, and our winner squeaked out a 46, despite no aces for any of us on the course. Overall, the course shows real promise, and could be one of the better ones in Cape Cod, but seems like we caught it at a bad time.
