Wellfleet Dairy Bar hosts a mini golf course that is actually a side attraction to the main feature, a drive-in movie theatre! Wellfleet Cinemas is operating this drive-in, the only one on Cape Cod and one of only about 300 left in the country.
While we have never partaken in the drive-in, we have had a chance to play a few rounds of golf here. This “vintage” and “retro” course is supposedly the same obstacle course from the original construction in 1961, but don’t worry, they have done….some updating. The course is clearly all hand painted, featuring a spaceship, windmill, the classic lighthouse, and a small castle.
The wooden surrounds are clearly freshly painted, but as you can see from some of the photos, weeds are starting to creep through and around the structures, and the property could use some fresh grass and pavement to make the course a bit more scenic. The putting surface was relatively good, save for one or two rips and some spotty patches, but is certainly not higher quality. There are some interesting obstacles, like bowling pins, but it never really feels like it’s done well enough to truly wow us.
There is no written par on the generic scorecard, but we were able to manage another under 40 score, with our winner clocking in at 39 and second place finishing just behind at 40. We completed the front 9 with an 18, so that should tell you about the simplicity of the course; plenty of chances for aces here. Mini-golf is $6/adult, $4/child, and $2/person for replays, which is a good deal for people that get to the drive-in a bit early.
Overall, this is a fun, quaint course that is pretty well kept, but it loses some of it’s luster thanks to it’s less than desirable surroundings and landscaping. However, we rarely see more than 3 or 4 parties on the entire course at a time, so if you are looking to find your way away from the crowds, this might be the spot.
