We were very excited on our recent trip to Lancaster, PA to try a bunch of the high quality mini-golf in the area, and Boulders Miniature Golf was one that was near the top of the list. As we approached the course, we of course noticed the Scoops Ice Cream next door, and then found out that in 2020, Scoops has actually purchased the miniature golf establishment and is “bringing the course back to it’s original form”, according to the website.
As we started out on the course, it was definitely more of a compact course than the ones we had played earlier in the day at Lost Treasure and Waters Edge. We joked after those 36 hole courses we needed a bit of a “palette cleanser.” Unfortunately, while the course was enjoyable, the atmosphere takes a little bit of a hit in our experience.
On their website, the course promises “the roar of cascading waterfalls, cross over streams and ponds 7 times.” While there is a nice water feature around hole 1 and 2, the only water feature we saw running was the waterfall that fed that pond, and unfortunately, it had a strong stench of manure. All the other places it looked like there could be water had overgrown weeds, rocks, or mud. Improving (or revitalizing) these water features would have greatly improved our experience at the course. Although it had good shade, the wooded atmosphere was extremely buggy and filled with gnats.
The course itself is interesting and moderately challenging, but there are some aces to be had. The course has built in rubber putting mats, but we passed on using these. There are one or two rips on the course, but nothing that was egregious. There is one par 4, a two level pipe hole that plays very difficult, but looks more like weird design than actually meant to be difficult.
The course was relatively on par with most others in the area, with $9.50/adult and $8.50/senior, as well as weekday pre-5pm special of $7.50/person (another frequent occurrence in the area). With one ace, we were able to slide in with a 45, just one over par of 44. Overall, this is a nice local course, but there is definitely room for improvement, and there needs to be more rejuvenation for us to consider this course on par with those in the Lancaster area.
