The mini-golf at Saybrook Point is nestled right on the Long Island Sound, giving this course the beautiful slogan, “Putt A Round By The Sound.” It’s true, the only way to get closer to the water would to be on one of the mega-yachts that dot the harbor!
It’s hard not to compare this course to another one about an hour down the Connecticut coast in Cove Mini Golf in Norwalk. Saybrook Point has a course that looks to have been recently replaced; the carpet is in great condition, and the course is clearly well taken care. Even with a stiff breeze of the sound, there was no debris to speak of on the course. There was ample opportunities for shade if needed, which was nice on this sunny Labor Day adventure.
This course is a loving dedication to the town of Old Saybrook, featuring miniature replications of Town Hall and the police department, in the same style of one of our favorite course, Lake Hopatcong Mini Golf. However, the holes that actually dot the course are far simpler than those at Hopatcong or Cove. In addition, despite looking quite large, there were several holes that felt extremely short in length. Similar to some courses at the shore, having too many simple holes feels like it takes the fun or skill out of the game, and it makes it go too quickly. While we applaud the interesting design and integration of local history, it did come at the detriment of the creativity ond difficulty of the holes.
A par of 45 was no match for us on this day. We scored a 33, just two off the course record, with 5 aces, and maybe could have challenged that record had we gone another round. $7/person is just right for this course, even though that is an increase from the $5 just last year. Overall, a simple but fun course in a beautiful location makes this a stop we will definitely make again.
